We here at Zelda & Scout are firm believers in separation of the holidays. October is for jack-o-lanterns, November for turkeys: We do not subscribe to pre-Thanksgiving Santa hats or peppermint kisses. We fast and abstain, shutting out the twinkle lights and the carols that every store starts piping in as soon as Halloween passes (sometimes even before). But the minute the clock hits midnight on Turkey Day, we press play on our holiday mixes, and keep them on repeat until December 26th.
Last year, we brought you 22 of our favorite festive tunes, and it’s a mark of just how holly jolly we get this time of year that we had zero trouble coming up with 30 more to share this year (in fact, we still had difficulty narrowing it down). We’ve got Christmas songs, New Year’s Eve songs, general winter songs, and even a new Chanukah song (no easy fight — when it comes to holiday tunage, the Maccabees remain in desperate need of a miracle). There are folksy tunes and jazzy ones, treasured classics sung since our childhoods and contemporary covers that have recently wormed their way into our earbuds.
From Elvis and Emmylou to Chanticleer to Jimmy Buffett and many, many more, we hope these songs make your Decembers merry and bright, no matter what or how you choose to celebrate. May your cider be hot, may your candles shine bright, and may all your Christmases, Chanukahs, Christmukkahs, Kwanzaas, Winter Solstices, Boxing Days, Saturnalias, and New Year’s Eves be white.
